Digital Photography

Introduction

I got started in Digital Photography with the purchase of my Fuji 6900Z at the end of 2001. I picked the Fuji based on reviews I read at dpreview.com. I recommend anybody interested in buying a digital camera to check out dpreview. The Fuji had the most features for the least amount of money (at the time). I was looking for a camera that had some manual controls so that I could experiment and play a little.

In 2005, with a pending trip to Africa I decided to upgrade. I realized I was going to need more memory cards and batteries. Also, I thought a bigger zoom would be helpful in Africa. At the suggestion of a friend I looked at the Panasonic Lumix cameras and decided on the FZ30. Shooting digital is not much different than film, the big difference is that you can see the results immediately. You also have the ability to alter or correct the picture using software on your PC. Though you can print your own photos I mostly display and collect my photos on the computer. I have a HP All-in-One printer/scanner (HP 3210) that makes excellent prints. However, I prefer to upload my photos to Shutterfly, and let them do the printing. Most of the photos you see on this site were taken with my digital camera's.

Software

The PC is often referred to the "digital darkroom" and it's the use of software that prepares your photos for the output to either paper or the web.

CompuPic by Photodex - This is a good basic viewer/editor I use to view, crop, resize and do some minor adjustments. I find this software easy to use and it serves my purpose.

EXIFER - used to edit, backup and restore EXIF and IPTC tags, rename files, and watermark images. And it's FREE!
One really neat feature of digital photography is that when you take a photo the camera stores information about the shot along with the image, this is called the EXIF data. The information includes the date and time taken as well as most of the camera settings. On my camera I can manually set f-stop and shutter speed, those details get written to the image file in a special place, you don't see it on the picture. It's great to have this information stored with the original image.
