18th Century Carsharlton Park Gates

These gates are at the entrance to the former William Coe estate. The estate is located near Oyster bay and is now the Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park. I go here often to relax, walk, and recently take pictures. Note: There are two stone pillars on either end of the gates that don't show in the picture because these pillars were under wraps at the time. Click image for larger view.

"Sussex metal worker Thomas Robinson created the gates in 1711 for Sir Charles Scawen of London. Italian artisan Catalini carved the stone pillars and John van Nost the Elder executed the massive lead sculptures of Acteon and Artemis. The gates had been installed at Scawen's estate in Surrey, Carshalton Park, but the estate was never completed."

For more information about the estate and aborteum please see the Planting Fields Foundation web site.
